Crypto Tank Standoff Drilling Holes

Crypto Tank Standoff Drilling Holes

Monday, May 2, 2022

We have received several questions about modifying the standoff plate with holes for liquid flow. If you are doing this at home we have found that using a step bit works the best.

However before we get started lets talk about laying out the grid for the holes.  I like to use a good old fashion yardstick and magic marker (sharpie).  You can get both at any home improvement store, most likely in the paint section.

To start I measure a 1.5 inch border around the stand-off, then starting at the back (closed end) and working to the front (open end) I mark 1-inch increments.  I do the same on the sides and then draw in the grid. It will look something like this when your finish marking it.

As you can see in the photo I support the standoff on a block of wood, in this case, I am using a piece of 4x4 post, but a 2x4 should also work well..

Next, I drill all the holes, swapping out the batteries as they go dead.  I only drill down one step on the drill bit, the idea is lots of little holes so that when you feed the liquid it is kinda like a showerhead.  you can go larger or space the hole every 1/2 inch if you like.

When I am done drilling all the holes in the top of the place I flip it over and use the drill to remove any sharp edges left from drilling through the top.  You can see what I am talking about in the image below.

After removing as much as possible with the drill and being careful not to enlarge the hole to the second step on the bit.  I will then switch to using a sander with 100 grit sandpaper to remove any remaining sharp edges.  This can be done on both the bottom and top of the standoff to remove all the sharp bits of aluminum.

Once you are done sanding the holes should look nice and safe like in this photo below. (Tip: use the drill to loosen the sharp bits if the sander does not knock them off)

Although not required the final step is to remove all the permanent marker lines.  I just use acetone (or nail polish remover) and a rag and the lines come right off.  When you are all done you should have a standoff that like similar to the following:

Please feel free to leave your comments or suggestion below.  We love to hear your feedback.

Update May 14, 2022:
Adding a photo of a standoff in which we driller hole for two types of miners (L3/S9 and A1246).  As you can see we used the fan cutouts as a template and spaced the miners accordingly in the tank.  They we drilled hole only where the fan opens landed.  This will maximize the cool liquid flowing up through the miners and hashboards.
